Cronosgroup is hiring a Director, Legal Counsel - Employment to provide practical, business-focused legal guidance on employment matters across Canada and the U.S. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, Head of Litigation, you will be a key advisor to senior leadership and cross-functional partners.
What You'll Do
- Provide legal advice on employment matters including hiring, performance management, discipline, terminations, restructurings, and compliance with Canadian and U.S. laws.
- Partner with senior leadership on executive employment matters, including executive compensation.
- Manage employment-related disputes and claims, oversee external counsel, and coordinate strategy and resolution.
- Lead or oversee workplace investigations, reviewing plans and reports for thoroughness and defensibility.
- Draft and review employment documentation such as agreements, separation agreements, policies, and templates.
- Monitor changes in employment laws and regulations, providing updates and recommending improvements to policies.
- Prepare responses to regulatory, audit, and third-party requests, including document production.
- Research and prepare legal briefs and memoranda on employment law issues.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to develop and implement policies, processes, and guidance.
- Work closely with the broader Legal team and cross-functional partners to support business objectives.
- Manage the Company’s Conflict of Interest policy and Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.
- Deliver annual training on the Code for all employees.
- Provide advice and guidance on compliance with employee privacy laws.
What We're Looking For
- LLB/JD and admission to the Bar of Ontario (or significant experience with Ontario employment laws and procedures).
- At least 5 years of in-house or law firm experience.
- Subject matter expertise in Canadian and U.S. employment and labor law.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to travel moderately, as needed.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks, work on short lead times and meet tight deadlines.
Nice to Have
- In-house experience in a mixed manufacturing, agricultural, and professional environment.
- Working knowledge of Canadian and E.U. privacy laws.
Team & Environment
You will report directly to the Deputy General Counsel, Head of Litigation.
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary: $180,000 - $200,000 (Ontario*) per year.
