Volarisgroup is looking for a Director, Engineering to own the performance and evolution of our global engineering organization. This senior leadership role reports to the General Manager and is accountable for the division's P&L, technical direction, and delivering sustainable, capital-efficient growth for our profitable, remote-first company.
What You'll Do
- Manage and coach a team of DevOps, software development, and QA engineers located in Canada and India.
- Define and drive the technological vision with the General Manager and Leadership Team.
- Shape, articulate, and execute the R&D strategy in conjunction with Product strategy.
- Collaborate with Product Management to validate Engineering release schedules based on approved priorities.
- Oversee system administration of Jira for the Engineering division.
- Assign and support all engineering assignments, tracking against the Roadmap and aligning with priority shifts.
- Constantly assess and monitor Engineering division performance, proactively improving KPIs and performance ratios.
- Provide monthly reports outlining Engineering performance (R&D ratio/trend, defects, backlog, productivity, capacity, and challenges).
- Define and direct the adoption of team-wide standards for development practices and processes.
- Oversee the DevOps function for self-hosted server infrastructure powering global app access.
- Oversee the delivery of a refactoring project involving machine learning, big data ingestion, and algorithmic forecasting.
- Collaborate with leadership to address escalated customer issues and delivery concerns.
- Complete an annual strategy planning exercise for Engineering as part of the company-wide Strategy Plan.
- Recommend process improvements for people management, technology management, and metric outcomes.
- Oversee Cybersecurity and IT to ensure secure, reliable, and compliant operations.
- Manage IT operations including user accounts, software/license costs, and company devices.
What We're Looking For
- A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or 10 years of relevant software development leadership experience including managing software system deployments.
- Experience leading a team of 8+ engineers and DevOps staff.
- Experience solving complex business solutions with technology.
- Experience with AI-first design and development practices.
- Proven success driving growth, profitability, and process efficiencies within a technology company or division.
- Minimum of 4 years successfully delivering a mixture of small, medium, and large software project deliverables.
- Ability to translate customer requirements into functional specifications.
- Ability to manage and adhere to a change management process to control scope and ensure profitability.
- Ability to drive quality UI front-end development.
- Management of budgets, including personnel investment planning and hardware investments.
- Deep knowledge of DevOps and hosting practices to manage a multi-continent platform.
- Proven experience building machine learning models at scale, e.g., millions of data points per day.
- Strong analytical skills combined with a strategic, action-oriented mindset.
- High energy and sense of urgency.
- Ability to travel occasionally (< 5%).

Team & Environment
You will lead a team of DevOps engineers, software development, and QA engineers located in Canada and India. This role reports directly to the General Manager and partners closely with the company's Leadership Team.
