Office of the State Comptroller (OSC) was looking for a Deputy Chief Actuary

The Office of the NYS Comptroller (OSC) seeks an executive-level Deputy Chief Actuary to support the Chief Actuary and the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS). You’ll be a key part of the internal actuarial team, bringing substantial project management and actuarial expertise to this critical function.

What You'll Do

  • Support the Chief Actuary and the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS)
  • Perform actuarial valuations and experience studies
  • Conduct gain/loss analysis and pricing valuations for legislative proposals
  • Ensure regulatory compliance
  • Lead and manage a small team of actuaries whose specialized skills and knowledge may outmatch your own
  • Support decision makers while maintaining a neutral tone
  • Manage personnel with care and comradery
  • Facilitate and leverage team enthusiasm
  • Develop high-level solutions, passing through minutia only when necessary
  • Explain complex actuarial work in a helpful manner, tailoring the level of detail to your audience
  • Work pragmatically and communicate effectively with colleagues, issuing recommendations with humility

What We're Looking For

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) AND eight (8) years of actuarial experience
  • OR Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) AND Enrolled Actuary (EA) AND eight (8) years of actuarial experience
  • OR Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) AND ten (10) years of pension experience with four (4) years of experience supervising actuaries (may be concurrent)

Nice to Have

  • FSA in the retirement benefits track with EA credentials
  • History working in the public pension arena
  • Experience leading (not merely supervising) a team of actuaries whose specialized skills and knowledge may outmatch your own
  • Experience supporting decision makers while maintaining a neutral tone
  • Fluency in ASOPs related to the pension practice area
  • Proficiency in SQL and Microsoft Access
  • Expertise in data analytics and Tableau
