Samsara is hiring a Data Support/Ops Engineer to join our team. You will be the guardian for our production data platform's health, stability, and performance, overseeing data ingestion, processing jobs, and warehousing. This role blends data engineering expertise with operational rigor to ensure high availability and data quality for our business intelligence and downstream consumers.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a primary responder for production data incidents, diagnosing root causes, implementing fixes, and ensuring data integrity.
- Design, implement, and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting systems for all production data pipelines and infrastructure.
- Manage, deploy, and maintain data and integrations pipelines and APIs.
- Continuously identify and implement optimizations to improve the speed, scalability, and efficiency of data processing jobs and API performance.
- Develop and enforce data validation and quality checks within pipelines to minimize errors and inconsistencies in production data.
- Collaborate with DevOps teams on managing the underlying infrastructure (AWS components) that hosts the data platform.
- Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date documentation for all operational procedures, pipeline architectures, and troubleshooting runbooks.
- Communicate incident status and SLA reports to management.
- Develop and deploy data pipelines, backend ingestion, or integration jobs to support minor enhancements and bug fixes.
- Work with data from a variety of sources including CRM, Product, Marketing, Order flow, Support tickets, and Finance data.
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles as we scale globally.
What We're Looking For
- A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data engineering, data science, information technology, or an equivalent engineering program.
- 3+ years of experience in a Data Engineering, Data Operations, or SRE role supporting production data environments.
- Must have SQL experience to perform data analysis.
- Experience with Python or a similar scripting language.
- Exposure to ETL tools such as Fivetran, DBT, Workato, or equivalent.
- Exposure to Python-based API frameworks and API management tools.
- Experience with RDBMS: MySQL, AWS RDS/Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or equivalent.
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Experience with a data warehouse: Databricks, Google Big Query, AWS Redshift, Snowflake, or equivalent.
- Experience with CI/CD, DevOps tools and practices.
Nice to Have
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to navigate complex distributed systems.
- Comfortable working with business users to assist with incidents and communicate proactively.
- Ability to engage directly with internal cross-functional stakeholders to understand their data challenges and provide targeted solutions.
- A self-starter who is motivated, responsible, innovative, technology-driven, and performs well both solo and as a team member.
- A proactive problem solver with good communication and project management skills to relay findings across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience with logging and monitoring tools: one or more of Splunk, DataDog, AWS Cloudwatch, or equivalent.
- Experience with AWS Serverless: AWS API Gateway, Lambda, S3, SNS, SQS, SecretsManager.
