Burkland Associates is seeking a Controller - Accounting to join our team. This is a hands-on, client-facing role responsible for implementing processes and systems for our venture-backed startup clients, typically from Seed through Series C. You will play a key part in overseeing monthly and yearly financial closes while managing accountants and processes.
What You'll Do
- Implement processes and systems for clients, including mapping out needs, choosing a system, setting it up, and implementing it.
- Facilitate client meetings and oversee monthly and yearly financial closes.
- Support startup clients who need Controller help but may not have an internal team.
- Manage accountants and processes for clients and possibly internally.
- Context shift, communicate, prioritize, and evaluate needs across a variety of clients.
- Build and oversee accounting processes for full cycle accounting.
- Prepare financial statements, reports, and presentations.
- Perform financial statement analysis and provide cost of goods sold guidance.
- Review and recommend chart of accounts.
- Account for intercompany activity and perform financial statement consolidations.
- Account for unrealized gains and losses.
- Perform equity accounting and reconciliations for stock and convertible notes.
- Apply advanced knowledge of ASC 606 - Revenue Recognition and ASC 842 - Lease Accounting.
- Oversee the work product of others and participate in the financial due diligence process.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or similar.
- Over 5 years of progressive experience.
- Background as a Controller.
- Experience building and overseeing accounting processes for full cycle accounting.
- Experience with financial statement analysis, chart of accounts review, and cost of goods sold guidance.
- Prior client-facing experience.
- Experience preparing financial statements, reports, and presentations.
- Experience with accounting for intercompany activity and financial statement consolidations.
- Experience accounting for unrealized gains and losses.
- Familiarity with equity accounting and reconciliations for stock and convertible notes.
- Advanced knowledge of ASC 606 and ASC 842.
- Experience overseeing the work product of others.
- Knowledge of the financial due diligence process.
