Cornell Cooperative Extension is hiring a Community Energy Advisor for the Elmira, NY area. This role will teach clean energy education programs in Chemung County as part of a regional Clean Energy Hub. You will focus on informing residents, multifamily building owners, and small businesses—particularly those with low to moderate incomes—about options for adopting clean energy strategies through direct education and community partnerships.
What You'll Do
- Teach clean energy education programming using workshops, public events, articles, web pages, and social media.
- Represent the Energy Team professionally to the public and community leaders.
- Establish and maintain relationships with community partners to leverage networks and resources.
- Provide educational tables at community events and present to large audiences.
- Make one-on-one phone calls and follow up with leads to provide additional information.
- Troubleshoot obstacles to adopting clean energy strategies.
- Connect interested residents with green job training and employment opportunities.
- Coordinate with local energy contractors to provide accurate program information.
- Train, engage, and coordinate volunteers and interns in program delivery.
- Serve as a subject matter resource on energy efficiency and respond to questions.
- Gather informal evaluation information from participants and help make recommendations for improvement.
- Assist in planning public events, program activities, and identifying fund development opportunities.
- Recruit, support, and provide oversight to program volunteers and interns.
- Collect, compile, and submit information for narrative and financial reports to meet funding requirements.
- Assist in gathering information for grant and contract proposals.
- Pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies for this role.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (Associate’s Degree and 2 years of transferrable program/functional experience).
- Experience related to public outreach or community education, preferably in energy efficiency and/or renewable energy.
- Basic understanding of home energy issues.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form.
- Experience working independently and as an effective team member, planning and consulting together.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License and ability to meet travel requirements.
- Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends.
Nice to Have
- Experience establishing and working with community stakeholders, especially those with limited income.
- Experience working with, and assisting in developing institutional relationships in Chemung County.
- Experience working as a volunteer or supervising volunteers.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to build relationships and work with diverse audiences while maintaining cultural competency.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes.
Team & Environment
You will work as a member of the energy team, reporting to a Program Supervisor and consulting with the team leader.
