The Senior Commissioning Engineer I leads commissioning efforts in construction settings by creating detailed plans, conducting on-site testing, and ensuring systems align with project goals. This role supports the verification of mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and life safety systems through documentation, field observation, and coordination with project teams.
Responsibilities
- Review project owner requirements to understand system expectations and performance criteria.
- Assist in evaluating the scope of commissioning work for various systems.
- Develop detailed commissioning specifications to guide testing and verification processes.
- Create commissioning plans, checklists, and test procedures for core building systems.
- Conduct field visits to observe and validate commissioning inspections and functional tests.
- Build collaborative relationships with contractors to resolve issues identified during system testing.
- Document findings through issue reports, field observations, and final commissioning summaries.
- Produce comprehensive Systems Manuals outlining operation and maintenance requirements.
- Collaborate effectively with professionals of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.
- Support the planning and execution of system performance tests, including NETA, SCADA, controls, and operational validation for mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and life safety systems.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by project or team leadership.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Architectural, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum of four years of experience in construction management or commissioning, preferably with an MEP contractor or dedicated commissioning firm.
- Strong knowledge of commissioning procedures, construction documentation, and how they integrate with quality assurance, quality control, and project delivery.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and data-driven commissioning platforms such as BIM360 or Cx Alloy.
- Professional demeanor with strong customer service orientation.
- Clear and effective communication skills, including active listening and receptiveness to diverse feedback.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 75% of the time.

Compensation
The base salary range for this role is $102,000 minimum to $137,700 maximum. Base pay increases by 5% for Denver, CO and Chicago, IL; by 10% for Seattle, WA and Portland, OR; and by 12.5% for Washington, D.C. Actual pay within the range depends on knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson’s incentive plan.
