ERG is hiring a Clean Air Act Engineer

About the Role

Join a team of environmental professionals as a Clean Air Act Engineer, where you will play a key role in shaping air quality compliance strategies for government and commercial clients. You will be responsible for preparing and evaluating air quality permits, ensuring alignment with federal and state regulations, and guiding project outcomes through sound technical judgment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and assess air permits for minor sources, Title V facilities, Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD), and major nonattainment areas
  • Verify compliance with State Implementation Plans, EPA standards, and relevant statutes
  • Analyze draft permits from regulatory agencies, focusing on applicability, emissions potential, monitoring, and required controls
  • Conduct Best Available Control Technology (BACT) and Lowest Achievable Emissions Rate (LAER) evaluations
  • Examine proposed regulations for consistency with federal requirements
  • Investigate compliance pathways by referencing comparable state-level rules
  • Support junior engineers and technical staff through mentorship and on-the-job training
  • Oversee multiple assignments and small teams, ensuring timely and accurate deliverables
  • Communicate clearly with clients and internal teams to align project goals and outcomes
  • Produce well-structured technical reports and documentation

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering—preferably Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental. A minimum of five years of hands-on experience with Clean Air Act implementation is required, particularly in drafting or reviewing air permits. You should have a working knowledge of EPA regulations, strong writing abilities, and proven project management skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is essential. The ideal candidate can balance multiple priorities, meet deadlines consistently, and produce clear, client-ready materials.
