The City of Saskatoon is hiring a Building Code Engineer to perform professional engineering work in building design and construction. In this role, you will be part of the Building Standards Division, ensuring public safety through diligent code review and application.
What You'll Do
- Review and approve drawings of commercial buildings for compliance with life, fire, health, and construction safety requirements.
- Advise owners, designers, and contractors on drawing deficiencies and code interpretations.
- Assist in developing operational policies based on interpretations of Acts and codes.
- Instruct Division members and the public on policy application.
- Conduct studies, analyses, and on-site inspections, and complete inspection reports.
- Assist property owners, developers, and consultants with enquiries about code and bylaw requirements.
- Review preliminary drawings and process commercial permit applications as needed.
- Assist with evaluating and developing new methods and procedures to improve efficiency and public service.
- Analyze lot severance and consolidation for building code implications.
- Conduct preliminary reviews of condominium conversions prior to Council reports.
What We're Looking For
- A degree in civil or mechanical engineering.
- Four to six years of related professional experience.
- Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within two years after hire, a Saskatchewan Building Official Class 3 Licence.
- Thorough working knowledge of the National Building Code, The Construction Codes Act and Regulations, and the Saskatoon Building Bylaw.
- Considerable knowledge of the National Fire Code, The Cities Act, NFPA Codes, CSA standards, ULC and Warnock Hersey Standards, and the Zoning Bylaw.
- Familiarity with Provincial acts and regulations related to building construction and safety.
- Knowledge of materials, procedures, and techniques used in building construction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, design professionals, contractors, and developers.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and to identify and respond to periodic increases in workload.
Team & Environment
You will join the Building Standards Division within the Community Services Department, performing a key public safety function for the city.
Benefits & Compensation
- Annual salary range: $86,211.84 to $101,175.60 CAD (2023 rates).
