Position Overview
This role supports the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic (NIWC Atlantic) Expeditionary Enterprise Systems and Services (E2S2) Division by engineering and maintaining resilient, automated cloud infrastructure. The Automation Engineer will implement secure, scalable solutions using AWS services and modern DevOps practices in a high-compliance federal setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage infrastructure deployments using Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as CloudFormation and Terraform to ensure consistency and repeatability
- Design, optimize, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI and AWS CodePipeline to support automated testing, deployment, and rollback workflows
- Configure and maintain monitoring, logging, and compliance systems using CloudWatch, AWS Config, and Splunk to proactively identify and resolve infrastructure issues
- Enable secure integration between AWS cloud environments and on-premises systems through VPC peering, Transit Gateway, and encrypted connections
- Collaborate with software developers, security teams, and systems engineers to align automation strategies with mission requirements
- Document architectural decisions, automation logic, and compliance evidence to meet federal audit standards
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and contribute to enterprise-wide automation initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Active Top Secret security clearance
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics with a concentration in computer science
- 14 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 10 years with a Master’s, from an ABET-accredited program
- DoD 8570.1M / 8140-compliant certification such as Security+ CE, CISSP, or Network+ CE
- Proven experience with GitLab CI, CloudWatch, and scripting in Python or Bash
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional
- AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
- ITIL or PMP certification

Work Arrangement
This position operates in a hybrid model with primary remote work and required in-person visits to Charleston, SC. Four times per year, one-week site visits are expected for Program Increment Planning events.
