Norfolk State University is hiring an Associate or Full Professor to serve as the Department Chair for English and Foreign Languages. This 12-month, tenure-track or tenured position begins July 1, 2026. The successful candidate will lead departmental administration, drive academic initiatives, and contribute to the university's mission of transforming students' lives through teaching, research, and service.
What You'll Do
- Administer the business and academic processes for a large department with full-time and part-time faculty who teach in the English major and General Education core.
- Engage actively in the College of Liberal Arts’ academic, creative, and strategic initiatives.
- Contribute to program and curriculum development within and beyond the department.
- Advise and mentor students while participating in recruitment activities.
- Develop and participate in ongoing program review, assessment, and accreditation efforts, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
What We're Looking For
- An earned Ph.D. in English with a specialization in African American Literature and/or Linguistics (Ed.Ds are not considered).
- Experience in administration and teaching at the higher education level.
- A demonstrated record of scholarly research and/or publications in relevant subfields.
- A demonstrated record of participation in curriculum design and implementation.
- A demonstrated commitment to serving diverse and/or underrepresented student populations.
Nice to Have
- Considerable facility with digitally integrated systems for higher education management and administration.
- Experience and commitment to fostering excellence in teaching and scholarly activity with broad disciplinary knowledge.
- Interest in opportunities to collaborate with other disciplines.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate to a diverse student body, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Team & Environment
You will lead the Department of English and Foreign Languages and report directly to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
