Thomson Reuters is seeking an Applied Research Intern to join our industrial research lab focused on advancing the state of the art in AI. You will develop cutting-edge techniques to improve generative AI modeling, specifically building long-term memory features for AI agents, with applications in legal technology ranging from deep research on legal documents to long-form content generation.
What You'll Do
- Research state-of-the-art techniques for developing and maintaining long-term memory functionality in AI-agentic systems.
- Contribute ideas and work on solving real-world challenges, from deep research on legal documents to drafting long-form documents in litigation and transactional law.
- Be involved in the entire model development lifecycle, building, testing, and delivering high-quality solutions.
- Gain hands-on experience optimizing datasets for agent development, model training and adaptation, evaluation, and developing automated techniques for the design and evaluation of AI agents.
- Work on a collaborative cross-functional team, learning from and partnering with colleagues across the globe.
What We're Looking For
- A PhD student (or a recent MSc graduate) in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or another quantitative discipline.
- Solid understanding and experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP), Information Retrieval (IR), and Machine Learning (ML) methods, including classic methods, deep learning (DL), and large language models (LLM).
- Experience in one or more programming languages, preferably Python, and experience working in collaborative (e.g., Git) and Cloud (preferably AWS) environments.
- Experience with ML/DL/NLP/LLM libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, spaCy, HuggingFace, LangChain, LangGraph, and Pydantic AI.
- Comfort working with unstructured datasets and knowledge of tools and techniques for data cleaning and processing.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- A publication on a relevant topic at major NLP/IR/ML venues (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, SIGIR, KDD, ICLR, ICML).
Nice to Have
- A background in NLP, experience building with LLMs, Python proficiency for rapid prototyping, and soft skills to bridge technical and business perspectives.
- Experience working on legal AI systems (e.g., legal drafting, contract analysis, legal research).
- Domain knowledge in legal, tax, or accounting, such as a law degree (J.D.), paralegal experience, etc.
