The Indiana Department of Correction / Madison State Hospital is hiring a Principal Utilities Engineer. In this senior-level role, you will provide crucial guidance and expertise to the INDOT Districts and Central Office on Capital Program projects, focusing on the effective delivery of road improvement projects involving utility coordination. You will act as the primary liaison between all stakeholders, including local public agencies, consultants, utility companies, railroad companies, and the Department of Transportation, with a constant focus on project schedule and budget.
What You'll Do
- Establish procedures for overseeing the construction of highway road and bridge projects.
- Initiate procedures for reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications, and construction methods with contractors.
- Prepare or review unique, unusual, or highly complex design plans for bridges, roads, and related traffic projects.
- Establish methods for initiating, developing, and administering major field traffic operations, such as complex interchanges, signage, lighting, and traffic signals.
- Establish procedures for reviewing and inspecting bridges to guide maintenance, repair, or major rehabilitation.
- Develop and establish practices for directing job control tests and documentation to keep field testing functions current.
- Provide advanced engineering expertise to field maintenance functions to resolve complex problems and ensure timely service.
- Conduct advanced-level technical engineering work in areas including engineering services, research, geotechnical engineering, land surveying, and special studies.
What We're Looking For
- A registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana is required.
- At least eight (8) years of engineering education and professional experience in engineering, civil engineering, transportation research, or a closely related field, with demonstrated ability to apply the required knowledge, skills, and competencies in a similar role.
- OR Graduation in an approved engineering curriculum of four (4) years or more and 4+ years of professional experience in a related field, with demonstrated ability in a similar role.
- Willingness to travel with appropriate accommodation.
- Broad knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles, methods, and procedures.
- Broad knowledge of planning, design, or construction of highway or transportation project features in accordance with engineering standards.
- Broad knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and procedures governing the field of specialization.
- Broad knowledge of computer-aided design and drafting functions.
- Ability to use initiative and creativity when making technical recommendations and decisions.
- Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports.
- Working knowledge of the Indiana Design Manual (IDM), Indiana Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (IMUTCD), INDOT standard specifications, and standard drawings.
- Knowledge of department systems including Scheduling Project Management System (SPMS), Deighton Transportation Information Management System (dTIMS), ArcGIS, and Work Management System (WMS).
