Role Overview
As Third Mate, you will play a key role in the safe and effective operation of expedition vessels traveling through remote coastal and riverine regions. You'll support navigation, bridge operations, and emergency preparedness while maintaining compliance with international safety standards and company protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct navigation duties using GPS, radar, depth sounders, and visual references to determine vessel position and avoid marine hazards
- Keep accurate records in navigation, radio, and pilotage logs during voyages in Alaska, British Columbia, and Pacific Northwest rivers
- Assist the Captain with docking, anchoring, and maneuvering in open sea, confined waters, and challenging conditions
- Lead and participate in safety drills including fire, man overboard, flooding, and medical emergencies
- Deliver safety briefings for kayaking and supervise related operations, including equipment maintenance
- Drive and support operations of inflatable boats, including embarkation and disembarkation of guests and crew
- Perform gangway watch duties as scheduled
- Maintain compliance with the Safety Management System (SMS), ISM Code, and ISPS requirements
- Conduct safety familiarization tours for crew and staff
- Serve as Waste Management and Pest Management Officer, upholding CDC Vessel Sanitation Program standards
- Ensure Safety Data Sheets are current and accessible to all crew
Qualifications
Required
- USCG Mate 100 GRT Near Coastal License
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification
- Valid TWIC card and US Passport
- USCG Medical Certificate meeting STCW standards
- STCW Basic Safety Training (within past 5 years)
- STCW Crowd Management and Crisis Management and Human Behavior certifications
- Radar Observer endorsement
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English for operational and regulatory communication
Preferred
- USCG Master 100 GRT Near Coastal License
- STCW Advanced Firefighting
- Bridge Resource Management certification
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats)
Work Environment
This is an onboard position with a rotational schedule of approximately 8 weeks on, 4 weeks off. Operations span diverse regions including Alaska, British Columbia, the Columbia and Snake Rivers, Gulf of California, and Central American coastlines including Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize.
