Hawaiian Electric is looking for a Technical Engineer to join our Telecommunications - Operations Department. In this role, you will provide engineering-level technical support for installing, operating, and maintaining Communications, Energy Management Systems (EMS), and computer/electronic equipment, ensuring reliability for our community.
What You'll Do
- Provide engineering-level support for the installation and maintenance of communications equipment, including on-site field work.
- Consult, design, architect, and implement solutions for Telecom integration with the NOSC, primarily using SolarWinds with ServiceNow.
- Conduct investigations and work with field personnel, contractors, or vendors to resolve equipment problems. Supervise bargaining employees as required.
- Assure the proper integration of new equipment into the system, including developing training, procedures, and job aids.
- Prepare and submit studies and engineering requests to resolve problem areas identified through maintenance and test reports.
- Establish and update technical documentation for preventive maintenance programs with an emphasis on personnel safety.
- Maintain a working database of circuit layout records (CLRs) in accordance with Telecom Engineering standards, utilizing NetTerrain or a similar online storage source.
- Assist the Supervisor with administrative duties such as budget, reports, and training. Substitute for the Communications Supervisor when needed.
- Provide technical support for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Energy Management System (EMS) and other computer/electronic equipment.
- Run diagnostic routines and analyze system malfunctions on a wide range of EMS equipment.
- Recommend and implement equipment modifications. Compile performance data and perform failure analysis.
- Develop and review test, troubleshooting, alignment, and calibration procedures.
- Develop diagnostics and implement hardware test equipment for digital printed circuit boards.
- Coordinate work with other divisions, departments, customers, and manufacturers. Assist engineering departments in special projects.
- Keep abreast of new technological advancements and apply new technology into the existing EMS and Communication structure.
- Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Thorough working knowledge of digital logic, electronics, electrical engineering fundamentals, and microprocessor-based technology, normally acquired through college-level courses or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of communications systems fundamentals and computer operating system firmware.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Windows Server, Windows Active Directory, Linux, VM Ware, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, ASA Firewalls, Nokia SR OS, and Cisco XR and XE operating systems.
- Working knowledge of SolarWinds and ServiceNow for developing physical and logical network topologies.
Nice to Have
- Working knowledge of LAN, MPLS, wireless communication equipment, PLTE, Microwave, antennas, transfer/trip teleprotection circuits, and analog/digital radio, microwave, and fiberoptic technology.
- Current Cisco certification and Nokia Network Routing Specialist (NRS) certifications.
- FCC License.
