This part-time role serves as an elementary art instructor across two schools—Salem Elementary and M. Christian Elementary—combining for a 0.6 full-time equivalent appointment. The teacher will lead engaging, age-appropriate visual arts instruction for students in grades PreK through 5, following the district’s curriculum framework to ensure meaningful learning experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement lesson plans that align with state standards and student developmental levels
- Assess student progress consistently and adapt teaching strategies to support diverse learning needs
- Use district-approved curriculum materials to guide daily instruction and long-term planning
- Maintain a structured, respectful classroom environment that promotes safety and creativity
- Supervise students during non-instructional times, including school events and emergency drills
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to integrate art into broader educational goals
- Engage parents through regular, clear communication about student work and classroom activities
- Help organize and install art exhibitions at schools, district events, and the annual Fine Arts Festival
- Attend required meetings, including faculty and curriculum planning sessions
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local education policies
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and possess or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with a Visual Arts endorsement. Applicants will be required to pass federal, state, and child protective services background checks, along with tuberculosis screening. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong knowledge of elementary art education, effective classroom management, and the ability to plan, deliver, and assess creative learning experiences.
Proficiency with standard classroom technology—including computers, projectors, and curriculum software—is expected, as well as experience using specialized art tools such as kilns, printing presses, cameras, and darkroom materials.
Work Environment

Compensation & Benefits
