About the Role

The University of Chicago is hiring a Systems Administrator 3 to design automated, scalable, and rapidly deployable solutions for infrastructure and server configuration. In this role, you will serve as part of the Tech staff, the front line of defense for computer security, and oversee all systems engineering and administration needs within the Department of Computer Science.

What You'll Do

  • Perform system and network administration functions independently, understanding the interactions between hardware, OS, and network operations.
  • Assign personnel to projects, direct their activities, and evaluate their work.
  • Analyze system logs and identify potential issues with computer systems.
  • Perform recovery procedures, scheduling, backups, and monitor batch processes.
  • Plan for, install, and maintain necessary patches, upgrades, and vendor-recommended maintenance for servers.
  • Install and maintain intrusion detection, monitoring, and auditing software.
  • Configure systems to maximize performance and compatibility while minimizing costs.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain diagnostic procedures for high production quality, reliability, and availability.
  • Monitor applications, operating systems, and end user services.
  • Recommend, install, and maintain hardware and software firewalls.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, compliance tracking, and maintenance of documentation.
  • Configure, install, upgrade, and maintain server applications and hardware.
  • Implement OS enhancements to improve system reliability and performance.
  • Administer operating systems, maintain security, and implement backup procedures.

What We're Looking For

  • A college or university degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Nice to Have

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Experience managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP network services, system utilities, and OS installation.
  • Proficiency in a multi-platform network environment including mail service and client support, backup technologies, and Mac/PC communication software.
  • Direct work experience with Linux operating systems.
  • Proficiency with research technologies including SLURM.
  • Understanding of client and web server administration.
  • Experience with Linux mail server (Postfix/Cyrus/Spamassassin) and mailbox management.
  • Familiarity with standard programming languages such as Python, Ruby, C, C++, and Bash shell scripting.
  • Knowledge of configuration and management of clusters.
  • Knowledge of backup technology and other monitoring and automated systems management technologies.
  • Knowledge of the Linux operating system.
  • Knowledge of Proxmox virtualization.
  • Knowledge of Puppet configuration management.
  • Knowledge of integration and management issues in a heterogeneous computing environment.
  • Understanding of intruder techniques and software exploitation methods.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Compensation range of $88,000.00 - $114,000.00.
  • Health, retirement, and paid time off benefits.
