Wärtsilä is looking for a Systems Engineer to take technical ownership of our utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects. In this role, you will be the key technical Subject Matter Expert, overseeing project design, commissioning, and support for AC and DC electrical systems, ensuring they meet all customer and contract requirements.
What You'll Do
- Collaborate in a cross-functional environment, leading the technical team in a project-focused engineering effort.
- Establish and maintain the engineering, design criteria, and applicable standards and specifications for the Energy Storage System (ESS) project.
- Interface with external product vendors to understand the specification(s) and function(s) of their product(s) and service(s).
- Specify appropriate system components, calculate component ratings and quantities, and create detailed bills of material for energy storage projects.
- Review detailed electrical plans produced by others and provide precise organized feedback in a timely manner.
- Review project technical specifications and provide feedback to ensure that project requirements will be met.
- Perform site visits and ESS field inspections in advance to check any risks from the engineering side.
- Provide Tier 2 project technical support for internal and external stakeholders.
What We're Looking For
- Minimum Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Power Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
- 3 years of experience with renewable energy, specifically with distribution or transmission-level Energy Storage Systems.
- Fluency in English is mandatory.
- Ability to travel to domestic and international project sites and/or vendors (approximately 10-15%).
Nice to Have
- Experience and knowledge with lithium-ion battery systems.
- Experience in the UK, Belgian, or Chinese markets.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards for ESS and inverters (e.g., NEC, IBC, IFC, NFPA, UL, IEC).
- Experience with grid compliance process and testing (e.g., UK / ENTSO).
- Ability to use energy management systems to operate, troubleshoot, and commission battery systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate highly complex engineering, construction, and operational issues.
- Additional Language Skills, including Flemish or Chinese dialects, are of high importance and advantageous.
- Experience with utility-scale energy storage and renewable energy projects and products (bi-directional inverters, various battery chemistries, PV, wind turbines, flywheels, etc.).
- Understanding of Inverter, Converter, Transformer, Battery, Circuit breaker, Fuse, and AC/DC power supply electrical equipment.
- Ability to explain in detail the electrical principles of voltage, current, real and reactive power, energy, charge, AC/DC voltage, single-phase, and three-phase power, and other fundamental electrical engineering concepts.
- Ability to read and understand drawings of electrical controls, especially single-line, three-line, fire safety systems, and communication diagrams.
- An understanding of power quality analysis, harmonics, and their impact on system stability.
- Experience with industrial control methods and SCADA systems.
