CloudLinux is hiring a Staff Engineering Manager to provide operational leadership for our Endless Lifecycle Support (ELS) engineering department. In this remote-only role, you will be the primary people-leadership layer, responsible for the day-to-day management of team leads and engineering managers, ensuring effective execution and delivery while partnering with the Department Director on strategy.
What You'll Do
- Manage 6-8 team leads and engineering managers, conducting 1:1s, driving career development, handling performance reviews, and planning succession.
- Own hiring for lead and manager roles, supporting interview processes and ensuring new leaders ramp up effectively.
- Identify and mitigate engagement and retention risks, supporting team well-being and a sustainable pace of work.
- Propose and implement reporting structures, spans of control, and role clarity in partnership with the Director.
- Use AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor to streamline management tasks, including 1:1 preparation, performance notes, and status summaries.
- Own department-level Jira configuration, boards, and workflows, establishing clear metrics and visibility into progress.
- Oversee delivery across teams, monitoring sprint health, roadmap execution, and removing blockers using Jira and data.
- Evolve department-level Agile/Scrum practices, Jira usage, and cross-team workflows to ensure consistency and continuous improvement.
- Allocate people and capacity across teams based on priorities, balancing short-term delivery with technical debt and improvement work.
- Facilitate collaboration between ELS teams and other departments such as support, product, and other engineering organizations.
- Maintain and elevate standards for technical quality, AI adoption, and management practices across the department.
- Define and track department-level metrics for throughput, quality, retention, and hiring, reporting to the Director and stakeholders.
- Own operational and people escalations, involving the Director only for strategic, product, or customer-facing decisions.
- Translate department strategy and product priorities into clear goals, milestones, and team-level objectives.
- Handle routine operational and people-management details, bringing only strategic, product, or customer-critical items to the Director.
- Provide the Director with structured input on team health, risks, and opportunities to inform strategy and roadmap planning.
What We're Looking For
- Upper-intermediate or better English proficiency, both written and spoken.
- 3+ years of experience managing team leads and/or engineering managers in a remote-first environment.
- A solid technical background in areas like Linux, packaging, scripting, or application security.
- Strong experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies, roadmap execution, and cross-team delivery.
- Proven leadership using Jira for boards, workflows, and reporting, with experience establishing progress measurement and visibility at team or department scale.
- Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain technical leads and managers, including performance management, career frameworks, and difficult conversations.
- Experience owning day-to-day operations—capacity, prioritization, process—while a senior leader focuses on strategy and external factors.
- Clear, structured communication skills with leads, managers, directors, and stakeholders, with the ability to represent the department internally.
- Comfort using AI tools as a management aid for status updates, reporting, analysis, and written communication.
Nice to Have
- Experience in security or lifecycle support domains, such as CVE/patching, end-of-life (EOL) support, or TuxCare/ELS-style products.
- Experience driving AI adoption or engineering excellence initiatives across multiple teams, or using AI for management tasks like reporting and 1:1 prep.
- Familiarity with CloudLinux or ELS products and customers.
