Quora is looking for a Staff Backend Software Engineer to join the Core Product team for Poe, a platform for making state-of-the-art AI accessible to everyone. You will build cutting-edge features from scratch that serve millions of users daily, focusing on Poe’s core messaging and bot discovery experiences.
What You'll Do
- Collaborate closely with designers, product managers, data scientists, QA, and other engineers to implement and deliver interactive, intuitive AI-powered user experiences.
- Lead a group of engineers to drive a project from start to finish, championing user experience and sustainable, scalable code practices.
- Iterate quickly on projects, from ideation to implementation and launch, using the backend web technology stack.
- Represent engineering in strategic planning and cross-functional prioritization sessions.
- Coach top technical talent, help establish and grow the team, and mentor new hires.
- Participate in on-call responsibilities to ensure Poe provides a reliable and high-quality product.
What We're Looking For
- Availability for meetings and impromptu communication during Quora’s 'coordination hours' (Monday-Friday: 9am-3pm Pacific Time).
- 6+ years of experience working with large-scale codebases and systems, particularly web applications.
- 5+ years of experience in Python or a similar programming language.
- A passion for learning and always improving yourself and the team around you.
- Professional experience leveraging backend storage systems such as MySQL, MyRocks, Memcached, or Redis.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Passionate about API design, the developer ecosystem and overall developer experience.

- Compensation: US: $183,647 - $267,615 USD; Canada (Toronto/Vancouver): $236,940 - $276,220 CAD; Canada (other): $221,144 - $257,806 CAD + equity.
