Oversee the configuration and support of mainframe hardware within data centers, leading client migrations, managing hardware lifecycles, and ensuring the functionality and supportability of CPU, DASD, and Tape subsystems.
Responsibilities
- Configure mainframe hardware components using tools such as HCD, IOGEN, and IOCP.
- Lead the setup of client environments during onboarding and migration projects.
- Serve as escalation contact for hardware-related issues, including failed tape drives, offline devices, and automated alerts.
- Manage and implement hardware maintenance enhancements and system updates.
- Upgrade client infrastructure, including mainframe processors, storage, and tape systems.
- Define and generate configurations for mainframe equipment connected to central processing units.
- Assess existing and proposed systems for technical feasibility and long-term supportability.
Requirements
- Seven years of experience in z/OS environments with focus on Tape, DASD, CPU, and related hardware.
- Proven ability to create HCD and IOCP configurations for zOS, zVM, and zVSE in multi-data center setups.
- Experience managing multiple client hardware upgrades and data center transitions.
- Advanced proficiency with Z Series HMC and support element systems.
- Capacity to lead migration and upgrade initiatives with minimal supervision.
- Solid understanding of network connectivity for mainframe subsystems and HMCs.
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with account management and project teams.
- Experience coordinating with vendors and distributed data center support teams.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities for complex hardware issues.
- Familiarity with ITSM processes and adherence to operational procedures.
- Proficiency with Excel, Visio, and MS Project or similar tools.
- Ability to assess architectural designs for operational supportability before client delivery.
- Experience designing hardware solutions aligned with business and technical requirements.
- In-depth knowledge of z/OS operating system functionality.
- Understanding of replication methods for tape and DASD across mainframe platforms.
- Experience building and maintaining disaster recovery configurations across multiple recovery sites.
- Participation in disaster recovery testing exercises.
- Knowledge of mainframe data encryption technologies.
- Familiarity with terminal emulation tools such as Putty.
- Proven ability to mentor junior members of the hardware configuration team.
