Thomson Reuters is looking for a Software Engineer - Legal Prompt Engineer to prototype ambitious new uses for AI that will transform the legal industry. You will work in a fast-paced, experimental environment to address real-world legal challenges by developing AI-driven legal tools.
What You'll Do
- Develop and prototype AI-driven legal tools by designing prompt chains and writing Python code.
- Collaborate with customers including lawyers, judges, and government agencies to understand needs and translate problems into solutions.
- Experiment with and deploy frontier AI models, often working with early-access technologies.
- Balance legal workflows with technical creativity to build products that streamline legal work.
- Work in a fast-paced, highly experimental environment, iterating rapidly to test new ideas.
- Engage in cross-functional teamwork with engineers, designers, and legal experts to refine and scale prototypes.
- Drive original thinking and initiative in a culture that values curiosity and experimentation.
What We're Looking For
- A JD degree or equivalent degree from a common law country.
- Demonstrated ability to write production-level Python code and quickly prototype technical solutions.
- Deep curiosity about artificial intelligence and a passion for staying ahead of rapid advancements.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with a knack for translating customer pain points into technical solutions.
- Comfort with ambiguity, experimentation, and rapid iteration in a fast-moving environment.
- Proven ability to work independently and take initiative on new projects without waiting for detailed instructions.
- Collaborative spirit with ability to work across disciplines and communicate with engineers, designers, and legal professionals.

- Base compensation range varies by location: $80,640 - $149,760 for New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. $70,000 - $130,000 for other eligible US locations.
