Unhcr is hiring a Senior Protection Assistant

UNHCR is looking for a Senior Protection Assistant to join its team in Lima, Peru. In this presential role, you will provide quality, timely, and effective protection support to persons of concern, ensuring they are involved in decisions affecting them and helping to uphold international protection standards.

What You'll Do

• Consistently apply International and National Law and applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policy, standards, and codes of conduct.
• Provide counselling on protection issues to persons of concern and liaise with competent authorities for documentation.
• Support and contribute to the design of protection-related Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) based programming with partners.
• Conduct preliminary information gathering and interviews to support eligibility, status determination, and durable solutions.
• Contribute to measures to identify, prevent, and reduce statelessness.
• Contribute to country-level child protection and education plans as part of the protection strategy.
• Monitor Standard Operating Procedures for all protection and solutions activities.
• Participate in individual protection case management, including cases of GBV and child protection, and report on protection incidents.
• Assist in identifying durable solutions, including voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement.
• Draft reports and routine correspondence, update databases, and compile statistics within your area of responsibility.
• Contribute to initiatives to enhance national and local protection capacities.
• Select persons of concern for interviews and decide on relevant information sharing.
• Enforce integrity in the delivery of protection services by local implementing partners.
• Support the identification and management of risks and opportunities impacting objectives.

What We're Looking For

• 2 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma; or 1 year of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
• Sound understanding of the legal and public policies framework in Peru concerning refugee protection and access to State services.
• Proven experience in case management, including cases relating to gender-based violence and child protection.
• Solid skills in interagency and interinstitutional coordination.
• Excellent drafting skills.
• Strong teamwork, communications, and interpersonal skills.
• Fluency in Spanish is essential; a good level of English (minimum B2) is required.
• You must be legally present in Peru at the time of application, recruitment, and appointment.
• Proof of vaccination against Covid-19.
• Functional Skills: IT-Computer Literacy, PR-Protection-related guidelines, standards and indicators, PR-Refugee Protection Principles and Framework.

Nice to Have

• Knowledge of UNHCR tools (ProGres, BIMS, Rapp).
• Certificates and/or Licenses in International Law or Political Science.
