Responsibilities
- Fine-tune the 'Handshake' between HikariCP, ProxySQL, and XtraDB
- Optimize multiplexing, query routing, and connection pooling to eliminate latency spikes
- Solve the locking issues inherent in DB-backed job queues (JobRunr/Quartz)
- Identify and resolve row-level contention and long-running transactions that block the XtraDB buffer pool
- Partner with backend teams to ensure Hibernate isn't generating 'noisy' SQL or holding onto connections longer than necessary during background processing
- Manage the K8s cluster to ensure high availability
- Harden pod termination logic and resource scheduling to ensure background workers don't impact API stability
- Help define the roadmap for moving beyond DB-backed queues to high-throughput messaging (e.g., NATS, RabbitMQ, or Redis)
Requirements
- Expertise in ProxySQL & XtraDB: ability to configure mysql_query_rules and hostgroups
- Understanding of XtraDB/InnoDB locking models and ability to interpret PERCONA_RECAP or slow query logs
- Strong knowledge of JVM performance, including HikariCP lifecycle and Hibernate/JPA transaction management
- Ability to identify connection leaks and unoptimized persistence contexts
- Proficiency with Kubernetes (kubectl), including service discovery mapping to ProxySQL backends and graceful shutdowns in containerized environments
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Helm
- Use of Prometheus/Grafana for tracking the 'Golden Signals' of application and database proxy performance
