About the Role

Optum Tech, part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking a Senior Manager to provide strategic leadership for the design, development, and deployment of a cloud-based platform. You will shape platform strategy, establish engineering standards, and lead teams to ensure the platform’s performance and reliability align with business objectives.

What You'll Do

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for a cloud‑based platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Partner with senior stakeholders to shape platform strategy and translate business priorities into executable technical roadmaps.
  • Own technical governance and architectural direction for technology selection, cloud infrastructure, and integration patterns.
  • Establish and institutionalize engineering standards, best practices, and quality frameworks across multiple teams.
  • Lead and mentor engineering leaders and senior engineers, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee code review and design review practices, balancing speed, quality, and innovation.
  • Drive cross‑functional collaboration with product management, UI/UX, security, and DevOps to deliver a high‑quality user experience.
  • Stay current on cloud and AI/ML trends, assessing their relevance for measurable business value.
  • Own platform performance, reliability, and operational health, including proactive monitoring and cost optimization.
  • Partner with DevOps, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure secure, compliant, and scalable deployment models.
  • Ensure teams operate in compliance with company policies, security requirements, and organizational directives.
  • Articulate complex technical concepts, trade‑offs, and recommendations to senior leadership and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Build trusted relationships and influence across the organization to drive alignment.
  • Lead with empathy, emotional intelligence, and inclusivity, fostering psychological safety and continuous learning.
  • Navigate ambiguity and change confidently, making informed decisions that balance speed, risk, and long‑term impact.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers to build leadership bench strength.
  • Demonstrate solid conflict management and negotiation skills to align teams toward shared outcomes.
  • Act as a role model for accountability, integrity, and resilience, setting the tone for high performance.

What We're Looking For

  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • 5+ years in engineering leadership roles leading large, cross‑functional teams.
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, DevOps, observability, incident management, and production readiness.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing engineering leaders, with a track record of building leadership pipelines.
  • Proven leadership in designing, developing, and scaling cloud‑based platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Deep understanding of cloud architecture, distributed systems, and high‑availability environments.
  • Solid expertise in platform engineering, microservices architecture, API design, and modern development practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and enforce engineering standards, governance models, and best practices across teams.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML technologies and platform evolution trends.
  • Proven experience driving performance optimization, scalability planning, cost management, and operational excellence.
  • Solid understanding of security principles, compliance requirements, and secure‑by‑design methodologies.
  • Solid executive presence with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in influencing without authority and building alignment across diverse global teams.
  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to lead with empathy, inclusivity, and psychological safety.
  • Solid decision‑making skills in ambiguous environments; able to balance short‑term priorities with long‑term vision.
  • Proven excellent conflict management and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated accountability, resilience, and integrity, acting as a role model for engineering excellence.
