Responsibilities
- Guide, mentor, and develop a high-performing team by setting clear expectations, providing feedback, fostering growth, and managing performance directly.
- Take ownership of outcomes related to provisioning, fleet management, failover, point-in-time recovery, upgrades, observability, performance, and security.
- Translate customer and business requirements into a multi-quarter roadmap with incremental milestones.
- Shape architecture and assist senior engineers in making explicit, well-reasoned trade-offs.
- Enhance operational quality across service level objectives, on-call processes, incident response, maintenance, and automation.
- Collaborate directly with customers to convert recurring pain points into product enhancements.
- Coordinate dependencies, identify risks early, and maintain predictable execution across a distributed organization.
- Recruit a balanced mix of talent in PostgreSQL, systems, infrastructure, reliability, and product engineering, while promoting ownership and constructive technical debate.
Requirements
- At least 8 years in software engineering, with a minimum of 3 years managing engineers in infrastructure, databases, or developer platforms.
- Proven experience building and operating a customer-facing stateful service with stringent requirements for availability, durability, security, and performance.
- Working knowledge of PostgreSQL or managed relational databases, including replication, write-ahead logging, high availability, recovery, upgrades, observability, or performance diagnosis.
- Technical credibility to engage deeply in architecture and incidents without being responsible for daily implementation.
- A track record of hiring, coaching, developing, and retaining engineers, including senior individual contributors.
- Strong judgment in execution across ambiguity, parallel workstreams, risk, and long-term system health.
- A customer-oriented mindset, strong product partnership, clear communication, and experience leading distributed teams.
Nice to Have
- Experience managing PostgreSQL, relational databases, or cloud control-plane leadership.
- Depth in PostgreSQL internals, extensions, replication, storage, performance, or database reliability.
- Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, or multi-region deployments.
- Experience taking infrastructure from early adoption through general availability.
- Open-source contributions, technical writing, public speaking, startup, or founder experience.
