Muttdata is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team of data nerds. In this role, you will build the backend services that power client reporting experiences, drive architectural discussions, and champion project quality while mentoring other engineers.
What You'll Do
- Build backend services, taking responsibility for code quality, scalability, reliability, and performance.
- Drive architectural discussions and write RFCs to document technical decisions.
- Constantly improve project quality via code contributions and advocacy for larger-scale changes.
- Partner with Product Management and Design to meet users’ needs without sacrificing quality or accruing tech debt.
- Implement tests and monitors to prevent regressions and catch production errors.
- Become an SME for the team’s backend systems, mentoring other engineers in backend development and troubleshooting.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of professional experience with web technologies, including experience on a single application long enough to see the consequences of decisions.
- Experience on full-stack product development teams, providing technical input on requirements and building and launching major new features to external users.
- Advanced proficiency in Java and a deep understanding of object-oriented programming principles.
- Significant experience designing backend services, data models, and interfaces that are maintainable, scalable, secure, and resilient.
- Demonstrated excellence in execution, balancing speed with quality.
- A track record of technical leadership—driving decisions, mentoring peers, and maintaining a high bar for quality and reliability.
- Pragmatic excitement about new technologies, focused on solving real business problems.
- Excellent verbal, asynchronous (Slack), and written (documentation, PR summaries) communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, navigating ambiguity to translate business objectives into deliverables.
- Proficient with Macs, Git (GitHub), and CI/CD.
Nice to Have
- Proficient in using AI tools (e.g., Claude) to increase development efficiency.
- Strong familiarity with AWS services and cloud infrastructure.
- Experience with GraphQL, Temporal, and Terraform.
- Experience with Python and AirFlow.
- Practical knowledge of DevOps practices and tools, including Docker and Kubernetes, for containerization and orchestration.
- Experience with Front End Development using React, Typescript and Relay.
