Whatnot is hiring a Software Engineer, Inventory Experience

About the Role

Shape the future of inventory management for live commerce

You’ll join the Inventory team within Seller Engineering, where your work directly influences how sellers list, manage, and represent their items. This role centers on building robust backend systems that reduce friction, improve data fidelity, and scale with platform growth.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead end-to-end development of features that simplify how sellers interact with inventory tools
  • Design and maintain APIs and services that power real-time listing and catalog experiences
  • Optimize data modeling in relational databases to support transactional accuracy and performance
  • Collaborate with product and design to redefine how sellers present merchandise during live sessions
  • Work autonomously to define scope, identify trade-offs, and deliver impactful solutions with minimal oversight
  • Ensure inventory data is consistent, searchable, and visible to the right audience

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience building and maintaining backend systems in production environments
  • Strong grasp of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, with experience modeling transactional data
  • Proven ability to deliver features quickly while balancing technical debt and scalability
  • Experience owning projects from concept through deployment and iteration
  • Solid product sense with a focus on usability for both sellers and buyers
  • Comfort operating in fast-moving environments with evolving requirements
  • Willingness to challenge assumptions and advocate for better solutions

Nice-to-Have Experience

  • Working with Python or Elixir in scalable service architectures
  • Event-driven systems using Kafka or SQS
  • Designing GraphQL or REST APIs
  • Background in e-commerce, marketplace platforms, or inventory systems
  • Familiarity with containerized deployments via Kubernetes or Docker
  • Integrating LLMs for structured data extraction or content generation in catalog workflows

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role based in New York. Team members are expected to live within commuting distance of the New York hub, with flexibility to work remotely or on-site. The team balances focused individual work with in-person collaboration for planning and problem-solving.
