The Safety by Design Lead will embed safety across the entire lifecycle of HVDC projects, from research to delivery, ensuring adherence to global standards and promoting a proactive safety culture. Based in Västerås or Ludvika, Sweden, this role combines strategic direction with hands-on execution within a global engineering environment focused on advancing the energy transition.
Responsibilities
- Develop and lead the implementation of the Safety by Design framework across the HVDC organization
- Integrate safety requirements early and consistently throughout all stages of the project lifecycle, including research, tendering, design, execution, and delivery
- Serve as the primary contact for Safety by Design matters
- Work closely with internal teams such as engineering, quality, operations, supply chain, and R&D
- Engage with customers and external partners to align on safety expectations
- Promote trust in Safety by Design as a practical and structured approach
- Ensure safety requirements are clearly defined, understood, and incorporated into HVDC designs in compliance with relevant standards and regulations
- Lead the creation and deployment of governance models, methodologies, KPIs, and best practices for Safety by Design
- Support tendering, engineering, and project teams with processes, tools, analyses, and data to enable informed decisions
- Lead and contribute to safety assessments including FMECA, HAZOP, STPA, and related methods
- Coordinate with Operational Health & Safety specialists on overlapping responsibilities
- Train, coach, and mentor team members to enhance organizational safety expertise
- Foster a strong and consistent safety culture across all programs and projects
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent technical experience
- Proven experience in driving organizational change, such as implementing new development frameworks, tools, or governance structures
- In-depth knowledge of the safety lifecycle according to a major industry standard such as IEC 61508 or comparable
- Ability to convert complex safety principles into clear, actionable, and scalable processes for large engineering teams
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of initiatives, from scoping and stakeholder alignment to progress tracking and compliance assurance
