The New Jersey Courts, Mercer Vicinage, is seeking entry-level Probation Officers to join its Family, Criminal, and Probation Divisions. This key professional position involves interviewing defendants and victims, conducting investigations, supervising probationers, and enforcing court orders. The role may include field work such as home and jail visitations.
What You'll Do
- Interview defendants and victims to prepare pre-sentence and pre-trial investigation reports.
- Conduct investigations by checking criminal history records and contacting other agencies.
- Contact financial, medical, and treatment facilities for restitution information and progress updates.
- Supervise adults or juveniles placed on probation.
- Monitor and enforce court orders and conditions of probation, including drug testing.
- Monitor and enforce child support orders.
- Identify service needs and required interventions for clients.
- Conduct field work including home and jail visitations.
- Analyze case histories and coordinate services for clients.
- Review documents for compliance with court rules and approved practices.
- Schedule case management conferences and proceedings.
- Ensure timely disposition and entry of all orders.
- Make recommendations to the court and prepare cases for hearings.
- Assemble case files, documents, and exhibits for hearings or trials.
- Establish working relationships with divisions, vicinages, and outside organizations.
- Advise judges and management on case issues.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any area.
- Degree must include or be supplemented by 24 credit hours in the behavioral or social sciences.
- Applicants must submit a photocopy of their transcript at the time of application.
- If selected, an official college or university transcript is required prior to start date.
- Degrees conferred outside of the United States must be evaluated by a recognized evaluation service.
- Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US per Department of Homeland Security regulations.
- Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that includes fingerprinting.
- In accordance with the 'New Jersey First Act,' all persons newly hired by the Judiciary must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey within one year.

Positions are in the Family, Criminal, and Probation Divisions. Selected candidates may be assigned to any of these divisions.

- Compensation: Schedule A: $54,051.21 to $91,935.37. Schedule B: $54,051.21 to $88,257.96.
- For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range.
Work Mode
This is a hybrid position based at the Mercer Vicinage in New Jersey.
