Athena Actuarial Consulting is seeking a Principal - Medicaid Actuary to join our team. In this leadership role, you will set strategic direction, nurture key client relationships, and guide complex engagements from opportunity through delivery. You will play a critical part in growing our practice, developing high-performing teams, and ensuring Athena remains a trusted advisor in the health space.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage client accounts—ranging from small analyses to large consulting engagements
- Serve as day-to-day client leadership contact and strategic advisor on client engagements, ensuring high-quality deliverables and alignment with client goals
- Guide actuarial modeling, analysis, and review processes to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Demonstrate listening, writing and speaking skills required to effectively and empathetically address diverse technical and nontechnical audiences
- Mentor and manage junior staff, supporting their growth through training and feedback
- Partner with the leadership team to build and grow the health areas of practice and develop the team
- Assist with new business development and sales leads, including attending/speaking at relevant industry conferences, writing articles, and assisting with proposal evaluation, drafting and review
- Demonstrate exemplary levels of personal and professional integrity, and ability to support and promote Athena’s mission and values
- Participate in Athena strategy meetings and provide feedback on Athena’s strategic initiatives
What We're Looking For
- 15+ years of relevant experience
- ASA or FSA certification
- Expertise in Actuarial Modeling, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word
- Experience with Medicaid
- Clear, confident communication tailored to a variety of audiences
- Curiosity, continuously seeking to understand not just “what,” but “why” and “what if”
- Courage to share insights, especially when they challenge the status quo
- In depth experience in Client and/or Project management
- Demonstrated experience in health actuarial projects
- Successful experience in a consulting environment, managing multiple clients and accounts
- Experience managing a developing, creative problem-solving skills to identify flexible solutions to business questions
- Experience and desire in developing junior resources through training and day-to-day collaboration
- Proven track record in identifying new sales opportunities and driving revenue growth by strengthening existing client relationships
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment and travel to client locations as required
- Passion for growing a business from the bottom up through business development and strategic efforts

- Experience in proposal writing or thought leadership
- Professional engagement in industry conferences, speaking engagements, or publishing
- Commercial and employer health experience
