About the Role

LLNL is looking for a Platform Solution Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will design and implement cutting-edge cloud native solutions built on Kubernetes, containerization, and cloud native ecosystems. You will shape modern platform engineering practices, collaborate with teams to deliver robust, automated infrastructure, and help researchers utilize cloud native technologies for their work.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute to the architecture of a cloud native compute platform that meets requirements for 24x7 uptime and efficient, frequent software delivery.
  • Architect, implement, and manage cloud native applications utilizing tools such as Ansible, Helm, or Puppet to configure applications that implement moderately complex operational and security requirements.
  • Engage with various teams to assist with the development and deployment solutions on a cloud native compute platform.
  • Assist in transforming existing applications to cloud native applications.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of Docker/Kubernetes virtualization infrastructure in Linux to support moderately complex to complex operational, development, and security requirements.
  • Investigate and participate in the deployment of infrastructure and/or application monitoring, alerting, and logging tools for the DevOps infrastructure.
  • Document and version control the IT infrastructure and/or applications, using Git and Confluence; track/report work status in tickets using Gitlab.
  • Support and improve a GitLab CI/CD system used for automating deployments of infrastructure servers, Kubernetes cluster(s), and applications.
  • Participate in the implementation of automation tools to help with deploying, troubleshooting, and maintaining applications and/or cluster environments.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation for build and release pipelines.
  • Serve as a technical contact for complex software development efforts, providing technical direction and mentoring to junior and mid-level developers.
  • Contribute to software quality assurance (SQA) activities, including defining testing approaches, reviewing test coverage, and ensuring compliance with project and organizational requirements.
  • Perform technical risk assessment and mitigation, identifying potential issues related to architecture, performance, maintainability, or data integrity and proposing effective solutions.

What We're Looking For

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Broad experience interacting with computer security personnel to provide input to computer security plans, ensuring computer security compliance, monitoring systems for general health and security incidents, and developing security configurations that meet cyber requirements.
  • Broad experience with software development practices.
  • Experience with Linux environments and configurations.
  • Broad experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technologies to broadly defined tasks and projects.
  • Ability to set priorities and independently resolve moderately complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills necessary to interact with all levels of personnel and ability to work independently, under limited direction, in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Advanced knowledge of and significant technical experience with Linux operating systems, virtual environments (Vagrant, VMware or Kubevirt), containerized environments (Docker, Podman or Kubernetes) and/or related hardware.
  • Significant experience architecting, implementing and maintaining build and release pipelines leveraging CI/CD systems.
  • Experience delivering on advanced projects, achieving positive results, and driving projects to closure, on time and on budget with advanced analytical skills to analyze complex systems and networks.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing and implementing release and workflow pipelines for cloud native applications using CI/CD systems, such as Jenkins or Gitlab.
  • Experience with configuration management systems, such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or Salt.
  • Experience with Virtual environments (Vagrant, VMware or Kubevirt) and/or containerized environments (Docker, Podman or Kubernetes), as well as experience implementing security for cloud environments.
