About the Role

Baylor College of Medicine is hiring a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join the David J. Sugarbaker Division of Thoracic Surgery. In this role, you will provide high-quality surgical care under physician direction in a hybrid inpatient/outpatient setting. The selected candidate will be appointed as a faculty Instructor and will work primarily at the McNair campus and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Texas Medical Center.

What You'll Do

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care for adult thoracic surgery patients.
  • Obtain detailed patient histories and perform physical examinations.
  • See consults independently and/or with residents and fellows in various settings including the floor, ICU, and ED.
  • Formulate assessments and plans, and evaluate patient response to care.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic procedures such as x-rays, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and MR/CT imaging.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation in the EPIC electronic medical record system.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for inpatients and upon discharge.
  • Educate patients on therapeutic regimens, home care, and health maintenance.
  • Remove chest tubes and JP drains as indicated, and provide wound care to chest tube sites and surgical wounds.
  • Perform bedside simple wound debridement, suture closure, and intrapleural therapeutic procedures.
  • Provide wound care and education on cervical esophagostomies, negative pressure wound therapies, feeding tubes, indwelling pleural catheters, and tracheostomies.
  • Provide follow-up and health maintenance care.
  • Communicate with physicians, patients, and family members concerning patient care.
  • Provide guidance and work direction to support staff including nurses, social workers, medical assistants, and clinic coordinators.
  • Optimize discharge planning, including participation in daily multidisciplinary rounds for floor and ICU patients.
  • Provide timely and clear discharge communication to the outpatient team.
  • Provide orientation, direction, and support to PA/NP students, medical students, and residents assigned to the service.
  • Promote a positive, team-based work environment through supportive interactions with peers, staff, learners, and faculty.

What We're Looking For

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Board certification by the appropriate certifying organization.
  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Texas.
  • DEA certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • For NPs: Master’s degree in Nursing.
  • For NPs: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • For NPs: Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and required specialty certification.

Nice to Have

  • Surgical experience.

You will work under the direction of a physician within the David J. Sugarbaker Division of Thoracic Surgery.

Work Mode

This is an onsite position located at McNair (7200 Cambridge Street) and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Texas Medical Center.
