About the Role
The position supports cultural and environmental compliance by conducting paleontological fieldwork, monitoring excavation sites, and preparing technical reports when triggered by project needs.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys to locate and assess fossil-bearing strata
- Perform paleontological monitoring during ground-disturbing activities
- Document fossil discoveries using field notes, photographs, and maps
- Recover and preserve fossil specimens according to scientific standards
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local paleontological regulations
- Prepare technical reports summarizing field findings and recommendations
- Collaborate with project managers and regulatory agencies on fossil-related issues
- Assist in developing paleontological resource management plans
- Respond promptly to project calls for on-site evaluations
- Transport field equipment and supplies to remote locations
- Work in diverse outdoor environments under variable weather conditions
- Maintain accurate records of specimen collections and field activities
- Coordinate with laboratory staff for fossil curation and analysis
- Provide guidance on avoiding impacts to significant fossil resources
- Support environmental documentation efforts with paleontological input
Compensation
Hourly rate commensurate with experience; paid per assignment
Work Arrangement
On-call, as needed; no guaranteed hours
