Support a U.S. Government International Technical Assistance Program in Cape Town by delivering specialized expertise in petroleum geology and geophysics. This position contributes to national capacity building in energy and mineral resources, emphasizing sound policy, technical evaluation, financial oversight, and environmental stewardship.
What You'll Do
- Lead structural interpretations and 3D modeling to identify subsurface targets using field data and advanced software platforms
- Conduct regional to deposit-scale evaluations to guide exploration and development strategies
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including geoscience, engineering, legal, and regulatory specialists
- Develop geological models and resource estimates in alignment with industry standards
- Generate isopach, structure, and lithofacies maps using well logs, seismic data, and surface observations
- Design data collection strategies and support the creation of technical bid packages for licensing rounds
- Review and advise on drilling programs, reservoir characterization, and development planning
- Train local professionals in geological interpretation, resource assessment, and compliance processes
- Ensure technical reports meet regulatory requirements and support investment decision-making
- Integrate diverse datasets—including geophysical, geochemical, and production data—for comprehensive subsurface analysis
- Advise on environmental safeguards, safety protocols, and legislative compliance in coordination with government entities
- Manage contractor relationships and contribute to the design and oversight of drilling operations
Requirements
- Proven background in petroleum geology, geophysics, or related consulting roles
- Experience interpreting remote sensing data and conducting structural evaluations at multiple scales
- Proficiency with Gocad, Geomodeller, and Leapfrog for geological modeling and target generation
- Track record in mineral and hydrocarbon resource estimation using accepted industry methodologies
- Experience preparing technical documentation for regulatory and investment purposes
- Strong analytical skills in well log, core, and cuttings interpretation
- Ability to lead prospect assessments and support field development planning
- Experience training technical staff and advising institutional clients on geological risk and opportunity
- History of working within multidisciplinary teams and engaging with government stakeholders
- Familiarity with drilling operations, contract management, and regulatory compliance frameworks
- Effective communication skills for presenting complex findings across technical and non-technical audiences
