About the Role

University of Iowa Health Care is looking for a Nursing Unit Clerk to assist the nursing team in providing comprehensive patient care across in-patient and out-patient areas. This role is central to unit operations, requiring a working knowledge of nursing procedures and a commitment to effective communication.

What You'll Do

  • Communicate and interact effectively with patients, visitors, and health care professionals to maintain positive relationships
  • Utilize and maintain electronic communication systems, including text pagers and wireless phones, to ensure team and patient coordination
  • Provide information and direction to personnel and visitors, answer phones, deliver messages, and assist in updating unit White Boards
  • Help answer call lights and relay information promptly to appropriate team members
  • Navigate web-based resources and use online clinical and business applications proficiently
  • Perform defined computer functions and maintain accurate census information and ADT entry
  • Process patient charges in a timely manner and notify health care professionals of admissions
  • Complete and maintain hospital and nursing records using appropriate medical terminology
  • Assist in scheduling patient tests and appointments
  • Practice standard infection control precautions
  • Assist staff during emergencies and with other patient care services as directed
  • Maintain a cost-effective process for ordering, obtaining, and storing unit supplies
  • Participate in unit staff meetings and in-services
  • Perform other projects or tasks as assigned

What We're Looking For

  • Graduation from high school plus one year total of clerical experience, health care experience, and/or post high school education
  • OR any combination of clerical and health care experience totaling two years

Nice to Have

  • 6 months of clerical experience
  • Public contact or customer service experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Proficiency in MS Word
  • Proficiency in MS Excel
  • Excellent communication skills
