University of Iowa Health Care is looking for a Nursing Unit Clerk to assist the nursing team in providing comprehensive patient care across in-patient and out-patient areas. This role is central to unit operations, requiring a working knowledge of nursing procedures and a commitment to effective communication.
What You'll Do
- Communicate and interact effectively with patients, visitors, and health care professionals to maintain positive relationships
- Utilize and maintain electronic communication systems, including text pagers and wireless phones, to ensure team and patient coordination
- Provide information and direction to personnel and visitors, answer phones, deliver messages, and assist in updating unit White Boards
- Help answer call lights and relay information promptly to appropriate team members
- Navigate web-based resources and use online clinical and business applications proficiently
- Perform defined computer functions and maintain accurate census information and ADT entry
- Process patient charges in a timely manner and notify health care professionals of admissions
- Complete and maintain hospital and nursing records using appropriate medical terminology
- Assist in scheduling patient tests and appointments
- Practice standard infection control precautions
- Assist staff during emergencies and with other patient care services as directed
- Maintain a cost-effective process for ordering, obtaining, and storing unit supplies
- Participate in unit staff meetings and in-services
- Perform other projects or tasks as assigned
What We're Looking For
- Graduation from high school plus one year total of clerical experience, health care experience, and/or post high school education
- OR any combination of clerical and health care experience totaling two years
Nice to Have
- 6 months of clerical experience
- Public contact or customer service experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Proficiency in MS Word
- Proficiency in MS Excel
- Excellent communication skills
