About the Role

The University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering is hiring a Network Systems Administrator for the Faculty Information Technology Office. In this role, you will support the configuration, maintenance, and availability of our core operational infrastructure, including Active Directory, file servers, Linux servers, databases, and Azure cloud services.

What You'll Do

  • Perform daily infrastructure health checks to ensure stability, reliability, and security.
  • Handle day-to-day production support requests and the timely fulfillment of onboarding and offboarding tasks.
  • Manage user access and perform periodic access attestations to meet audit compliance.
  • Monitor and manage SSL certificates, ensuring timely renewal to keep web applications secure.
  • Support operating system updates and quarterly security patching for servers, desktops, laptops, and related systems.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for the Client Services team, resolving complex desktop issues.
  • Analyze and recommend network and system solutions, including infrastructure upgrades and new service deployments.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades regularly, and update administrative tools and utilities.
  • Perform daily system monitoring to verify hardware integrity, server resource availability, and completion of scheduled jobs like backups.
  • Troubleshoot complex computer system problems and network connectivity issues.
  • Execute security measures for network devices using institutional firewalls and infrastructure.
  • Translate tier-1 and tier-2 feedback into actionable solutions.
  • Create complex technical documentation and user support guides, including network topology maps and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate on project planning elements like cost estimates and milestones.
  • Serve as a resource on specific issues for a group of specialists.

What We're Looking For

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related experience providing IT support in a high-volume, client-centric, hybrid environment.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with developers and demonstrated DevOps experience supporting tools like Git/GitHub/Azure DevOps and CI/CD.
  • Expert knowledge of Windows Server, Windows Group Policy, Windows PowerShell scripting, VMWare, Remote Desktop Services, and Active Directory.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise-grade identity management, Windows Server 2019/2022, Linux (CentOS/RedHat, Ubuntu), clustering, Microsoft SQL Server, backup procedures, disaster recovery, and Office 365 & Azure.
  • A thorough knowledge of working with network switches, including protocols like DNS, DHCP, SNMP, and TCP/IP.
  • Experience with complex network and firewall management (PaloAlto).
  • Experience configuring detection and prevention technologies (SentinelOne, Tenable).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, solving complex technical problems and communicating effectively with non-technical users.

Nice to Have

  • ITIL and Information Security certifications.
  • Knowledge of web servers, document management platforms, and Endpoint Systems Management Appliances (KACE, etc.).
  • Certificates and/or working towards Microsoft certifications.
  • Familiarity with the University environment, governance, and policies.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Compensation is USW Pay Band 12, starting at $81,312 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $103,986.

This is an onsite role located at the St. George (Downtown Toronto) campus.
