Conservation Legacy is seeking a Natural Resource Management Assistant (52 Weeks) - AmeriCorps to serve as a field technician at Dry Tortugas National Park. You will conduct biological monitoring, perform science communication outreach, and assist park staff in a remote, subtropical environment.
What You'll Do
- Conduct biological monitoring surveys for queen conch, nesting birds, and nesting sea turtles.
- Perform science communication outreach to park visitors to protect natural resources.
- Assist NPS staff on routine natural resource projects including shoreline mapping, marine debris removal, and responding to wildlife strandings.
- Collect, record, and enter data for a variety of biological indicators.
- Develop and implement an independent project within the scope of the Natural Resource program.
- Create social media content and/or a blog to be shared with SIP and the park Interpretive Lead.
- Prepare and deliver a presentation focused on the results of the field season.
What We're Looking For
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or agrees to obtain one prior to using the education award.
- Agrees to complete a National Service Criminal History Check and a government security background check.
- Available to participate for the entire 52-week duration.
- Ability to complete long hours in full sun in harsh weather conditions (heat index in excess of 100 degrees).
- Physical capability to walk 7 or more miles daily (with gear) on sometimes rocky, uneven terrain.
- Capable of digging large, deep holes in the sand and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle.
- Must be comfortable talking with park visitors.
Nice to Have
- Previous professional experience in a natural resource management or marine science setting.
- Familiarity with handheld GPS units, database management (i.e. Microsoft Excel), ArcGIS, and statistical programs (i.e. R).
- MOCC boating certification, or experience being on/around small watercraft.
- Routine maintenance skills (using drills, cutting PVC, installing small fixtures).
- Advanced SCUBA diving skills (AAUS Scientific Diver, and/or Rescue Diver).
