Oversees the design, implementation, and ongoing management of Health Information Management (HIM) systems within the electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic document management (EDM) platforms. Ensures the integrity, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance of protected health information (PHI) across the legal medical record and enterprise systems. Leads a team responsible for maintaining accurate data structures, access controls, and system workflows that support clinical, financial, and administrative operations.
What You'll Do
- Direct the development and maintenance of HIM applications, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead initiatives to improve data accuracy, system efficiency, and compliance across EMR, patient access, and revenue cycle functions.
- Manage system changes, including upgrades, enhancements, and integrations, using structured project management methodologies.
- Translate operational needs into technical requirements and collaborate with IT partners to implement solutions.
- Supervise staff responsible for data validation, mass updates, and document conversion projects, ensuring adherence to data interface standards.
- Develop policies and procedures that uphold data integrity, security, and separation of duties across systems.
- Produce regular reports on system performance, data quality trends, and operational metrics to support decision-making.
- Identify opportunities for process optimization and lead continuous improvement efforts across information workflows.
- Advise on scanning, archiving, and digital record management strategies to reduce reliance on paper-based processes.
- Respond to complex data issues, including duplicate records, identity concerns, and chart corrections, exercising independent judgment within defined protocols.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience in healthcare information management, data privacy, security, or a related field.
- Proven ability to manage change initiatives and lead cross-functional teams in a complex healthcare environment.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio.
- Experience working with virtual servers, system integration, and enterprise health information systems.
- Ability to interpret regulatory standards and apply them to system design and operations.
- EPIC certification required within 180 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in EMR master file management and maintenance coordination.
- RHIT or RHIA credential with extensive HIM experience in a hospital or integrated healthcare system.
- Experience with document scanning systems and digital conversion workflows.
- Knowledge of compliance frameworks, medical record standards, and health information governance.
