Washington University in St. Louis is hiring a Medical Assistant III - Pediatric Endocrinology

About the Role

Washington University in St. Louis seeks a Medical Assistant III to serve as a key clinical resource in our large Pediatric Endocrinology practice. You will lead the work of other Medical Assistants, ensuring the overall smooth running of the clinical office while providing direct patient care and maintaining efficient clinical operations.

What You'll Do

  • Interact directly with patients to obtain vital signs, conduct EKGs, perform phlebotomy, and verify medications.
  • Prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms.
  • Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with examinations, procedures, and lab tests.
  • May assist with renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders.
  • May administer medications, including vaccines and injections, under physician or nurse practitioner order.
  • May schedule and assign work to other Medical Assistants to ensure appropriate staffing; assist in orienting and training new staff.
  • Direct patient flow, assist with special procedures/treatments, and complete requisitions.
  • Route phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with care coordination tasks such as calling patients with results, scheduling appointments and surgeries, and monitoring patient contacts.
  • Answer basic questions from patients and families regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
  • May complete requisitions/orders per Washington University guidelines.
  • Monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available and compliant.
  • Clean and stock exam rooms and sterilize instruments.
  • Maintain required HIPAA compliance and participate in in-services, continuing education, and cross-training.
  • Comply with OSHA, state, and federal regulatory standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • One of the following certifications: Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or American Red Cross), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA, AMT, or NHA), Licensed Practical Nurse (Illinois or Missouri), Registered Nurse (Illinois or Missouri), Registered/Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA), Registered Medical Assistant (AAMA or AMT).
  • Registered or Certified Medical Assistant with 6 months of related work experience (or graduate of an accredited nursing program with 1 year of experience).
  • Ability to show proof of a Medical Assistant certification/registration from an in-person proctored exam (NHA, AAMA, AMT) within 6 months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support certification (online-only certifications without a skills assessment are not sufficient).

Nice to Have

  • 3 years of Medical Assistant experience.
  • 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Skills in: Anatomy, Communication, Electronic Medical Records (EMR), Interactive Communication, Interpersonal Relationships, Medical Terminology, Physiology, Telephone Communications.

Team & Environment

You will work as the primary clinical resource in a large, multi-physician practice for Pediatric Endocrinology. This role may lead the work of Medical Assistants I and II.
