About the Role

AECOM is hiring a Mechanical Engineering Lead, Data Centers to act as the primary engineer for hyperscale data center projects. You will be responsible for designing and overseeing the construction of mechanical systems, including HVAC, piping, and fire suppression systems, as part of our Buildings + Places practice.

What You'll Do

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, responding to inquiries and concerns.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients to understand their needs.
  • Coordinate with multiple disciplines and act as lead mechanical engineer to deliver projects on budget and schedule.
  • Manage the mechanical team including HVAC, fire protection, and plumbing.
  • Develop detailed specifications for mechanical equipment like pumps, fans, and air handling units.
  • Write reports for internal and external purposes based on findings.
  • Create discipline plans to meet overall project scope and schedule requirements.
  • Stay current on codes and technologies for mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for data centers.
  • Analyze and evaluate mechanical system performance, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Provide technical support during construction, responding to RFIs and addressing issues.
  • Attend job site visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and equipment to enhance performance and reduce costs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams like electrical engineers for system integration.
  • Analyze energy usage, identifying optimization and cost-saving opportunities.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering plus ten (10) years of relevant experience in mechanical design/engineering with focus on data center infrastructure, or demonstrated equivalency.
  • Professional Engineer License (P.E.) is required.

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering plus twelve (12) years of relevant experience in mechanical design/engineering with focus on data center infrastructure, or demonstrated equivalency.
  • Extensive experience in mechanical engineering for data centers or other critical facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, piping, and fire suppression systems design and construction.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients.
  • Ability to think creatively and identify opportunities to enhance client experience.
  • Experience working with computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software.
  • Experience with data center design and construction, including design criteria and industry standards.

Work Mode

This role offers a hybrid work mode and can be based in our Arlington, VA office, other AECOM office locations, or fully remote within the United States.
