About the Role

SEPTA is hiring a Maintenance Manager to lead operations at our 69th Street Shop for City Transit. You will supervise maintenance personnel and manage major overhaul and minor refurbishment programs for our rail fleet, ensuring reliable and safe service for the region.

What You'll Do

  • Manage a group of employees with minimum direction, scheduling work to maximize economic, efficient, and safe work standards.
  • Oversee major rail vehicle overhaul and minor refurbishment programs including preventative maintenance, inspection, and failure diagnosis/analysis.
  • Control labor and material expenditures to comply with budgetary limitations.
  • Communicate with Union personnel and other supervisors to coordinate work activities.
  • Maintain accurate records on requisitions, schedules, and reports to reduce waste.
  • Provide technical assistance and support in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicles and equipment.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance and skill levels of technical and service personnel.
  • Develop and implement cost-effective maintenance practices.
  • Plan and forecast material and labor needs consistent with operating requirements.
  • Collect data on units and repairs to track reliability and perform trend analysis.
  • Assist Engineering in design changes to improve rail vehicles and customer service.
  • Instruct, train, and test newly transferred and hired employees.
  • Ensure fair treatment and equal opportunity for all employees.
  • Supervise troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of electronic/electrical systems on revenue rail vehicles.
  • Direct and monitor maintenance and preventive maintenance on electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Implement, operate, and maintain procedures for testing equipment and calibration schedules.
  • Evaluate and update prints and schematics with Engineering.
  • Investigate modifications to improve reliability and maintain failure data for trend analysis.
  • Validate repairs to meet acceptable standards for workmanship.
  • Provide technical assistance and support in the body repair of damaged rail vehicles.
  • Schedule collision repair activities and process work orders for sheet metal shop fabrication.
  • Inspect and prepare damage estimates for collision vehicles.
  • Oversee all body, sheet metal, and painting work assignments.
  • Supervise all machine shop activities, ensuring rail vehicle wheels and axles meet standards.
  • Supervise the rebuilding of rail car trucks and components per quality standards.
  • Supervise inspections and minor repairs to rolling stock.
  • Provide sufficient, clean, reliable, and safe rail vehicles for revenue service.
  • Supervise cleaning of rail vehicles.

What We're Looking For

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent, plus two (2) years advanced technical training in a field of specialization.
  • Three (3) years of relevant Vehicle Maintenance experience.
  • A valid Driver’s License.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity working in a unionized environment.
  • Acceptable attendance, performance, and safety records.

Nice to Have

  • Rail Vehicle Maintenance experience.
  • Mainframe or PC experience.
  • Supervisor experience.
  • Familiarity with labor agreements and SEPTA policies and procedures.
