North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a Life Safety Engineer

This position plays a key role in safeguarding public health by evaluating medical and residential care facilities for compliance with life safety, structural integrity, and environmental standards. As the designated Acting State Fire Authority for federal Medicare and Medicaid programs, the engineer conducts thorough assessments of nursing homes, group homes, ambulatory surgical centers, hospices, and hospitals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform initial and recurring inspections of healthcare facilities to verify adherence to life safety codes, facility operations, and environmental conditions
  • Carry out triennial surveys for facilities participating in federal reimbursement programs under Titles 18 and 19
  • Conduct validation reviews at hospitals and investigate physical plant-related complaints
  • Prepare and submit detailed reports to supervisory staff on inspection outcomes
  • Apply expertise in fire safety, building systems, and regulatory frameworks during on-site evaluations
  • Support compliance with federal and state mandates, including CMS documentation protocols

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution is required, along with three years of progressively responsible experience. Professional Engineer (PE) licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners may be necessary. Preferred candidates demonstrate in-depth knowledge of NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), NC State Building Codes, and federal regulations affecting healthcare facilities.

Proficiency with Aspen (Automated Survey Processing Environment) and iQIES (internet Quality Improvement and Evaluation System) is highly valued. Experience applying engineering principles to architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems in institutional settings is essential. The role demands frequent travel—up to four days per week—across the state, including overnight stays.
