Canada Life is seeking a Legal Counsel to join our team and support our Canadian wealth and asset management businesses. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President & Senior Counsel, Asset Management, you will provide practical, risk-based legal advice on securities law, investment fund manufacturing, and distribution. You'll work closely with legal professionals and business leaders on a wide range of strategic and tactical matters.
What You'll Do
- Work collaboratively with business partners to provide practical, risk-based legal advice impacting our wealth and asset management businesses.
- Draft disclosure documents for the initial and continued offering of investment funds.
- Draft and negotiate material contracts and exemptive relief applications for retail investment products.
- Support new product development and existing product reorganizations.
- Support institutional investment management activities.
- Negotiate contracts including sub-advisor agreements, custodial agreements, trading documentation, and service agreements.
- Research and advise on complex legal issues and regulatory requirements, including securities laws.
- Advise on individual and firm registrant regulation matters.
- Develop legal structures for new and innovative investment products and services.
- Review marketing materials.
What We're Looking For
- Law Degree and Member in good standing of a provincial Bar.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant legal work experience in a law firm, in-house, or securities regulatory body.
- Knowledge and experience with National Instrument 31-103 and National Instruments 81-101 through 81-107, investment funds, institutional investing, and general securities law.
- Self-motivated with ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a practical solution-oriented approach.
- Demonstrated superior skill in drafting agreements or public disclosure documents.
- Ability to proactively bring projects to completion.
- Highly focused with strong attention to detail.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills for simplifying complex problems.
- Superior organizational and time management skills for handling multiple projects.
- Willingness to learn new topics and work in an evolving business environment.
Nice to Have
- Independent Review Committee experience.
- General investment knowledge and completion of the Canadian Securities Course or Canadian Investment Funds Course.
- Experience relating to portfolio managers or private wealth.

You will be part of the legal team supporting the Canadian wealth and asset management businesses, reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President & Senior Counsel, Asset Management.
Benefits & Compensation
- Annual base salary range: $120,800 - $180,800.
