Lead Engineer – Water Pilot and Field Testing
Role Summary
This position leads the operation, maintenance, and technical support of a specialized fleet of pilot and field testing systems used in water, wastewater, and water reuse studies. The engineer ensures reliable, safe, and high-quality deployments through hands-on fieldwork, engineering analysis, and cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the preparation, commissioning, and decommissioning of pilot-scale treatment systems
- Conduct remote and on-site diagnostics to resolve equipment and process issues
- Support concurrent projects with varying technical scopes and timelines
- Apply engineering principles to optimize system performance and data integrity
- Perform calculations related to hydraulics, process design, and equipment specifications
- Manage vendor relationships and procurement for pilot components
- Design and fabricate custom equipment and system modifications
- Maintain quality assurance and quality control protocols for field operations
- Ensure compliance with safety standards in both workshop and field environments
- Utilize 3D modeling tools for system design and layout planning
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Chemical, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum of four years of direct experience with pilot system operations and field testing in water or wastewater treatment
- Proven ability in troubleshooting mechanical and process systems
- Strong data analysis and documentation skills
- Experience with process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and 3D modeling software
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- High attention to detail, initiative, and ability to work independently and in teams
- Commitment to safety, accuracy, and continuous improvement
Preferred
- Master’s degree in an engineering discipline
- Coursework or experience in water treatment processes, hydraulics, and plant design
- Background in instrumentation, controls, and automation
- Experience designing pilot studies or pilot test setups
- Proficiency in SketchUp or similar 3D modeling applications
Work Environment
This is an onsite role based in Boise, ID, with potential for flexible work arrangements. Travel may be required to support field deployments and client sites.
