Hawaiian Electric is hiring a Lead Control Engineer to provide expert-level leadership for our operational technology systems. In this role, you will plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise Control Engineers, delivering specialized hands-on support for real-time systems like Distributed Control Systems (DCS) across our generating stations. Your work will be critical to meeting the company's goals for system safety, reliability, and security.
What You'll Do
- Plan, organize, coordinate, supervise, and direct the Control Engineering section staff in delivering expert-level services for control, automation, and instrumentation at all generating stations.
- Manage programs supporting control system safety, reliability, and security, including hardware and software replacement or upgrades, network management, calibration, instrumentation, and alarm management.
- Evaluate the progress and performance of control systems and implement actions to maintain system and process reliability and security.
- Maintain the operating system, application software, modeling, graphic displays, application code, and databases for the Distributed Control System (DCS).
- Provide 24x7 support to Electric System Operations personnel for the safe and timely operation of generation control systems.
- Implement measures to reduce system vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
- Meet, discuss, coordinate, and negotiate with parties inside and outside the company to maintain or expedite progress on projects and programs.
- Serve as a technical consultant to management across HECO, MECO, and HELCO.
- Manage and administer all personnel matters for the control engineering section, including performance appraisals, interviews, recognition, and disciplinary actions.
- Ensure the safety and coordinate the training of all personnel under your supervision.
- Model behaviors consistent with company values and work with others to accomplish goals and objectives.
- Promote teamwork and mentor subordinates in the application of improvement tools, techniques, and behaviors.
- Effectively apply Daily Management System methods to continuously improve safety, quality, speed, timeliness, and cost of work processes.
- Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- Expert knowledge in Process Control Engineering.
- Working knowledge of key Control Engineering knowledge domains.
- Expertise in control algorithm development and testing.
- Expertise in loop tuning, including single and cascade loops.
- Expertise in DCS & PLC hardware, software, and firmware maintenance.
- Expertise in hands-on control algorithm development, implementation, and troubleshooting.
- Expertise in process analysis and troubleshooting.
- Expertise in system advocacy.
- Expertise in consulting engineering.
