Hawaiian Electric is hiring a Lead Control Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Leads planning, coordination, supervision, and execution of control engineering teams to deliver advanced-level services for automation, control systems, and instrumentation across all power generation facilities, including tuning, programming, maintenance, diagnostics, testing, and optimization of DCS and PLC platforms.
  • Oversees lifecycle management of control systems, including hardware and software upgrades, network integrity, calibration, alarm management, and system commissioning for new or modernized installations.
  • Assesses performance and reliability of control systems, identifying necessary improvements and integrating them into operational or capital budgets in a timely manner.
  • Responds to system disturbances and evolving operational conditions by initiating corrective or enhancement actions to maintain system stability and efficiency.
  • Maintains and updates operating systems, application software, simulation models, graphical interfaces, codebases, and databases for distributed control systems.
  • Provides round-the-clock technical support to operations staff for safe and efficient generation system control, ensuring continuous availability and reliability.
  • Safeguards control system security by maintaining compliance with internal policies, regulatory standards, and industry best practices, including vulnerability mitigation and access controls.
  • Collaborates with internal departments and external partners to advance project timelines and resolve technical challenges across the organization.
  • Acts as a technical advisor to leadership and cross-functional teams within the utility group, offering expert guidance on control engineering matters.
  • Manages full-cycle personnel functions including performance evaluations, hiring, recognition programs, and disciplinary measures for the engineering section.
  • Ensures team safety protocols are followed and coordinates ongoing training and professional development for all supervised staff.
  • Demonstrates behaviors aligned with organizational values, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement in team practices.
  • Encourages team cohesion and mentors team members in lean methodologies and waste reduction techniques applied to daily engineering tasks.
  • Applies daily management system principles to enhance safety, quality, efficiency, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness across all workflows under supervision.
  • Supports emergency preparedness and response initiatives as assigned, including readiness activities and on-call duties during critical events.
