Trupanion seeks a Canadian In House Counsel with direct property & casualty insurance experience. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, you will lead key legal and regulatory initiatives, support corporate governance, and manage a variety of projects tied to our insurance operations in Canada.
What You'll Do
- Provide ongoing legal and regulatory analysis and advice for property and casualty insurance operations in Canada.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable provincial, territorial, and federal insurance laws and regulations.
- Advise on legal and regulatory risks, providing mitigation strategies and appropriate escalation.
- Research and draft memoranda on relevant insurance, legal, and regulatory issues.
- Provide legal guidance for product development, enhancement, and distribution.
- Manage subsidiary corporate governance and compliance filings across all Canadian provinces, including Quebec.
- Draft and review contracts for insurance-specific operations and review vendor contracts to mitigate risk.
- Develop legal and compliance training as needed.
- Help maintain and develop policies, standards, and checklists.
- Review insurance-related marketing, disclosures, and incentives.
- Monitor, identify, and interpret new legislation and proactively propose and implement solutions.
- Participate in cross-functional compliance projects.
- Provide legal support in sales, complaint handling, regulatory audits, and licensing.
What We're Looking For
- 4 - 7 years of post-call legal experience.
- Background in corporate/commercial and regulatory compliance for property & casualty insurance.
- LLB or JD from an accredited Canadian university and call to the Bar in a Canadian province or territory.
- Experience gained at a top-tier law firm.
- Previous experience in the insurance industry.
Nice to Have
- Certification in data privacy or experience in Canadian privacy law.
- Expertise in marketing and advertising laws.
- Experience working with commercial, technology, and AI contracts in regulated industries.
- French language bilingualism or working proficiency.

Benefits & Compensation
- Annual salary range: CAD 165,000 - CAD 200,000.
