The University of Iowa Health Care, Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, is hiring a 50% APP Hospitalist to join the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. You’ll provide overall medical care and management for patients in the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital, working autonomously within the inpatient Newborn Nursery to plan, deliver, and evaluate healthcare with a focus on managing care, length of stay, resource utilization, and costs.
What You'll Do
- Assess patient health status through history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and other appropriate means.
- Plan and communicate treatment programs relating to patient health needs.
- Perform technical skills such as circumcisions and other common procedures as defined by collaborative practice agreement.
- Recognize, discriminate, and manage acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
- Determine and facilitate referral and consultation needs in a timely manner.
- Complete medical documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
- Initiate therapeutic measures using independent judgment according to recognized clinical guidelines.
- Participate in the instruction and teaching of trainees.
- Assume responsibility for supervisory and administrative activities and special projects as delegated.
- Perform patient and family assessment, develop differential diagnoses, implement treatment plans, and evaluate patient responses.
- Participate in research activities, quality improvement principles, and implementation of such activities.
- Utilize therapeutic communication skills to provide counseling to patients and families.
- Maintain expertise in common diagnoses and healthcare needs of the patient population.
- Function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing or Iowa Board of Physician Assistants, and UI Health Care standards.
What We're Looking For
- For Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners requirements, including graduation from an accredited PA program and/or NCCPA certification. Eligible for Iowa licensure.
- For Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): A master’s degree is required (preferred in nursing or PA studies). If master’s is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. A Current Iowa RN license is required. Current board certification as a nurse practitioner and licensure as an ARNP in Iowa is required.
- Ability to perform technical skills and function as an independent practitioner as defined by collaborative practice agreement.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Prior to starting: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
- Prior to starting: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Prior to starting: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Prior to starting: Federal DEA license.
Nice to Have
- One to three years of experience in pediatric patient care.
- Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and management for pediatric patients in an inpatient setting.
- Prior Pediatric APP experience or training.
- Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.
- Experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization, and decreasing costs while providing personalized care.
- For ARNP candidates: Understanding of the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components.

You will join the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, collaborating within a dedicated interdisciplinary team.

This is an onsite position located at the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
