About the Role

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking a Health Research Development Officer to join our research support community. This role plans, manages, and coordinates grant development services and resources focused on health research funding, primarily CIHR Strategic Grants. You will work closely with researchers and support staff across UBC campuses to increase faculty success in securing CIHR and other health-related funding.

What You'll Do

  • Provide authoritative information on research funding administrative processes for CIHR Strategic Grant programs and other health-related opportunities.
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate the delivery of SPARC support services, including consultations, editorial review, strategic resources, and educational services.
  • Handle communication of SPARC services and competition results through key channels like the VPRI Research Digest, SPARC’s website, and meetings with faculty administrators.
  • Provide criteria and editorial review feedback on CIHR Strategic Grant and Project Grant proposals from a broad range of health fields.
  • Plan, lead, and deliver educational programs such as information sessions, workshops, and strategic resources for CIHR Strategic Grant competitions.
  • Provide one-on-one consultations to faculty and team members to improve the strength and competitiveness of grant proposals.
  • Liaise with CIHR and other funding sponsors to ensure applications meet agency requirements and communicate these to faculty and staff.
  • Maintain a library of successful CIHR Strategic Grant proposals obtained from UBC researchers.
  • Analyze competition-related data and develop presentations and/or written reports.
  • Manage various research funding programs and initiatives, as required.
  • Promote services and programs offered by the SPARC Office.

What We're Looking For

  • A post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation with a minimum of four years of related experience, OR an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of six years of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a field related to an academic health or health-related field.
  • Previous experience supporting faculty in a research-intensive university.
  • Demonstrated skill in grant development and research administration.
  • A good understanding of health research culture.
  • Knowledge of CIHR and its funding opportunities, primarily Strategic Grants and/or Project Grants.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with ability to lead effective and professional presentations in person and virtually.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with experience coordinating programs and services, including preparing educational materials and delivering presentations.
  • A good understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion in health and health-related fields.
  • Excellent organizational, project management and time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, handle multiple projects/responsibilities and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve high quality outcomes in a sophisticated organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take lead on projects.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to analyze and interpret data to identify implications and provide recommendations.
  • Ability to supervise the work and progress of others, and provide feedback regarding alignment with SPARC principles to achieve goals.
  • Ability to maintain high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Good judgment with the ability to exercise tact and discretion.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative and productive working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Proficiency in standard computer software program applications and online video conferencing applications.

Team & Environment

This position is shared between Support Programs to Advance Research Capacity (SPARC), within the Vice President Research & Innovation (VPRI) portfolio, and the Faculty of Medicine Office of the Vice Dean, Research. You will report to the Manager, Grant Development – Health, SPARC.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Monthly salary range: $7,622.83 - $11,886.67 CAD
