Penn State is hiring a Hardware Research and Development Engineer

About the Role

Penn State Applied Research Laboratory is searching for a motivated Hardware Research and Development Engineer to join our Applied Signals & Systems Integration (ASSI) Department. You will have an active role in the entire sensor development process, collaborating with engineers across ARL to deliver complex sensor systems.

What You'll Do

  • Provide hands-on leadership of project teams
  • Provide technical management and leadership of research and development tasks
  • Mentor entry level engineers in sound engineering practices
  • Participate in the specification of system requirements and hardware/software architecture design
  • Design analog and digital electronic circuits and circuit boards
  • Assist in the development of new projects and proposals
  • Collaborate with engineers across ARL to deliver complex sensor systems

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science
  • 5+ years of relevant experience (for Advanced Professional level) or 2+ years (for Intermediate Professional level)
  • Experience in automated testing and measurement, hardware calibration, design, development, testing, and integration
  • Programming in MATLAB, LABVIEW, C / C++, or Python
  • Mixed Signal Design expertise
  • Experience with analog to digital converters and analog front-end design
  • Familiarity with circuit modeling and simulation methodologies
  • Ability to obtain a government security clearance
  • U.S. citizenship

Nice to Have

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
  • Schematic entry and PCB Layout using Altium Designer
  • Experience with Solidworks
  • Skills in Matlab, Labview, C, C++, and C#; design of DC-DC converters, AC motor drives, and control algorithms
  • Experience producing required technical documentation for complex systems
  • Background in modeling and simulation, software development, mechanical and power system design, or test and evaluation of sensor systems
  • Experience with LINUX and Windows OS systems
  • Experience with embedded systems including FPGAs and microcontrollers
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher
